Press Release – ATIEL and UEIL publish a methodology to calculate and report Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs) for Lubricants and Other Specialties

UEIL and ATIEL are pleased to announce the publication of ‘Methodology for Product Carbon Footprint Calculations for Lubricants and Other Specialties’.
Formed in January 2023, a Task Force consisting of ATIEL & UEIL members, external advisors and Carbon Minds has developed a harmonized cradle-to-gate (blenders / marketers exit gate) PCF methodology which can now be used by the whole lubricants industry, thus ensuring consistency and transparency throughout the entire supply chain.
To ensure wide acceptance within the industry the draft methodology was shared with other lubricants and industry associations, as part of a global-wide consultation phase. All comments have been reviewed and appropriately reflected in the final version of the methodology.
Mattia Adani, UEIL President highlighted that “To be able to determine Product Carbon Footprints for Lubricants and Other Specialties on a common, harmonized basis for the whole European Lubricants Industry is a decisive capability and we are delighted to have developed it together with ATIEL.”
Marco Digioia, ATIEL President stated that “This is a key step among the joint initiatives we are taking to bring a consistent approach to assess the environmental impacts of our products in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal and globally”.
The methodology document can be downloaded from ATIEL and UEIL websites.
The methodology is currently being reviewed by a 3rd party auditor to certify accordance with applicable standards. The review is expected to be concluded before end of 2023.

President’s Report
2023 UEIL Annual Congress
The 2023 UEIL Annual Congress took place from 31 May to 2 June in Manchester, UK, with the central theme “Sustainable Value Chains: Securing the future of the European lubricant industry”.
During these few days in Manchester, through presentations, panel discussions and dialogues between the participants: these topics and much more were tackled. This year’s Congress, with around 200 participants, was a resounding success, bringing together experts, professionals, and enthusiasts from around the world.
The Congress featured a series of captivating presentations, with renowned experts sharing their insights, stimulating new ideas and encouraging participants to explore new avenues for growth and development. It also allowed the participants to connect with fellow industry peers and establish valuable relationships; while also exchanging knowledge and experiences. We can only hope for these interactions to have fostered collaborations and created opportunities for future partnerships within the lubricants industry.
A heartfelt appreciation goes out to all the participants who made the Congress a success. Your presence and active engagement contributed to its positive and vibrant atmosphere.
The 2023 UEIL Annual Congress served as a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and innovation, and we hope to see you next year.

UEIL/ATIEL PCF Methodology Update
UEIL and ATIEL are pleased to announce a significant milestone in the creation of the “Methodology for Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Calculations for Lubricants and other Specialties”. Over the past six months, our cross-industry working group, inclusive of several stakeholders, has been dedicated to developing this harmonized methodology.
We are now at a critical stage where the draft of this methodology has been shared with various industry experts for review and feedback. It is being thoroughly examined to ensure it meets the unique demands of our industry and can facilitate widespread acceptance upon its release in the second half of 2023.
We are also grateful for the engagement with stakeholders such as ALA, ALIA, API, ATC, Catena X, GEIR, ELGI, ILMA, NLGI, and TfS, who are invited to give valuable feedback to our methodology. Their feedback will enrich the final document, ensuring that it encapsulates a comprehensive perspective of our industry and its associated sectors.

The EU Co-Legislators are currently negotiating the revised Energy Taxation Directive that the European Commission published two years ago. This revised Directive is important for the lubricant sector to promote a level playing field in Europe.
Furthermore, related to UEIL’s objective to prevent the inclusion of lubes under the Excise Movement and Control System (EMCS), certain EU Member States are concerned about increased fraud with lubes across Europe and are once again increasing the pressure to include lubes under EMCS. UEIL will continue its outreach to the EU Member States in the coming weeks to express its concern and will discuss with the European Commission the option of a definition of ‘light lubes’ that might be included under EMCS at the end of 2023.
The European Commission has also decided to abolish the quota on Gp II in the second half of 2022. Belgium has asked the European Commission to reinstall the quota on Gp II as on basis of input of the lubricant sector the demand is still higher than the supply on Gp II in the EU. However, there is no certainty that the European Commission is willing to discuss this topic at the next technical working group level in Q2 2023. UEIL is in favour to reinstall a quota on Gp II as the demand is still higher than the supply in the EU.

Today the United Kingdom Lubricants Association is launching the Metalworking Fluid Product Stewardship Group’s series of training videos on the subject of Looking After Your Metalworking Fluids aimed at workshop owners & machine operators to help manage their metalworking fluids to minimise health & safety risks, reduce machinery downtime and improve operational efficiency which is of interest to all associations and their members.
The videos are comprised of a series of ten modules covering all aspects of fluid management from bacterial control to managing fluid quality. The videos have been developed in conjunction with the Health & Safety Executive, and with the support of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre based in Sheffield.

UEIL launches a series of webinars “Upskilling to new ways of working during COVID 19 – A UEIL webinar series”, in cooperation with Katie King

Back in October 2019, I had the pleasure of travelling to Cannes to deliver a Keynote and a training session at UEIL’s Annual Congress. It was an amazing experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed discussing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and business strategy with UEIL members from across the world.
How the world has changed since then. Thank goodness for technology and the ability to pivot our businesses online, in order to remain in touch with – and motivate, lead and reassure – our teams.
Once again, I’m pleased to be able to partner with Valentina Serra-Holm and the UEIL to provide a series of 90-minute webinars focused on relevant and timely topics given the current climate.
I have tailored my signature training on AI, competitive advantage, and digital transformation to include advice for harnessing new technologies to cope during and after this pandemic. We will also be delivering a much-needed session focused on leadership in the wake of COVID-19, which focuses on communications, decision making, compliance, purpose, and more.
